On behalf of the Heirs of the Christenberry Estate - Subject to Confirmation
SOLD! AUCTION CANCELED! The Christenberry property, located at 3222 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, will be going to auction April 25. Located on the Tennessee River in the prestigious Sequoyah Hills area of Knoxville, the home was built in 1904 by William H. Gass, then-president of Knoxville Banking Company. Gass served as city alderman, then mayor of Knoxville 1904-05. Gass spared no expense building this English-style bungalow. He used the finest Brazilian mahogany, cherry and oak to build floors and woodwork, including an exceptional paneled staircase, large pocket doors, and cofered ceilings in the formal dining and living areas. Antique hand-painted Chinese wallpaper hangs in the dining room. A fieldstone fireplace is a focal point in the living room, and a glassed-in sunroom gives commanding views of the Tennessee River and Smoky Mountains, replete with a variety of mature trees and plantings. In its prime, the property featured an extensive putting green, grass tennis courts, barn with horse stalls, and a four-car detached garage. This property has direct access to the Tennessee River via a series of terraced gardens beyond a long sloping lawn. The location is ideal for a boathouse or a launch for kayaks. The house was sold in 1912 to the Varnell family, partners in Anderson-Dulin-Varnell, wholesale subsidiary of the late Miller's Department store. Dr. H.E. Christenberry, Jr., purchased the property in 1947, of which the house carries his name. The almost 6,000 sq. ft. house is situated on 4.8 acres, with more than 250 feet of Tennessee River frontage. With its 5 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms and finished basement, the next owner will have a choice of restoring it to its past grandeur or make room for future development. "Furrow Auction Company is proud to have the opportunity to work with the Christenberry family on such a historically significant piece of real estate," said Rob Strickland, Vice President, Furrow Auction Company. "Along with Tom Hughes, we are honored to be representing the Christenberry family – a family with deep roots in our community, well known for their success in numerous professions and, most importantly, their civic contributions." Furrow Auction Company will conduct the auction at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 25 on the property at 3222 Kingston Pike, Knoxville. The sale is being conducted in conjunction with Tom Hughes, Realty Executive Associates.- SALE PENDING
